Day 57: My Can Overfloweth

June 6, 2017
Lone Pine, CA

Well that was cold. Last night was definitely the coldest night on trail. It wasn’t terrible, but certainly below freezing. The cool temperatures were warmed by more food for breakfast provided by Dr. McDirty’s cousin Ross. We cooked tomatoes, onions, eggs, boerewors (South African sausage), and avocado.

After devouring all the foods we got a ride down from 10,000 feet to 3,000 feet in Lone Pine. We dropped Ross off at his plane before loitering at McDonald’s for a few hours eating lunch and deciding where to stay for the night. Upon deciding where to stay we checked in and went to the grocery store to resupply. Everything had been picked through when we got there, though. All the ramen and tuna had been cleared out leaving me to go with Polish sausage and mashed potatoes. Mashed potatoes are bland mush and the sausage may or may not go bad. Not to mention I can’t quite fit all of my food into my bear canister which I now have to carry for the next 300 miles. So yeah. This should be interesting.

Anybody trust him?

There was a cause for celebration this evening. Glowworm will graduate this week on the 8th with a masters degree in forestry and as is tradition in our trail family we celebrate with IPA’s and cookie dough. Well, we did it for my birthday so it only seemed fitting. I mean any excuse to put either of those items in my body is valid, but this seemed a big enough deal to consume them together.

In the morning we’re planning on getting breakfast in town, do some last minute errands, and hitch back up to the trail before tackling the first major section of the Sierras that includes Mt. Whitney and Forrester Pass. So what is likely to happen is we’ll wind up spending all day in town and camp back at Horseshoe Meadows again, bit we’ll see what happens.
